Unconscious Rules We Follow
Have you ever found yourself pushing through exhaustion just to finish a task, feeling like you have to get everything perfect, or constantly trying to please everyone around you even at your own expense?
If so, you are entirely human.
Most of us carry invisible internal rules that dictate how we think we ought to behave to feel safe, valued, or accepted. In Transactional Analysis (TA), these deeply ingrained habits are known as the Five Drivers.
What Are the Five Drivers?
Coined by Taibi Kahler, the Drivers are five common internal messages we absorbed early in life. They often sound like high expectations or strict demands whispering in the back of our minds:
Be Perfect: The internal pressure to get everything right, check every detail twice, and avoid making any mistakes.
Be Strong: The belief that you must never show vulnerability, handle everything on your own, and hide your pain or fatigue.
Try Hard: The relentless drive to put maximum effort into everything, often focusing more on the struggle of trying than on actually finishing or achieving.
Hurry Up: The constant racing sensation that there is never enough time, leading to rushed movements and chronic urgency.
Please Others: The deep habit of putting everyone else's needs, moods, and comfort ahead of your own.
Moving From Pressure to Compassion
These drivers often started out as clever survival strategies when we were young. They helped us win approval, keep the peace, or feel secure. But as adults, running on these automatic drivers can leave us burnt out, anxious, and disconnected from our actual needs.
The journey of exploring your drivers is not about judging yourself or trying to crush these parts of who you are. It is about shining a gentle, curious light on them so you can catch yourself in the act and say, "Ah, my 'Be Perfect' driver is pushing me right now."
When you bring that awareness into the room, you finally give yourself permission to slow down and choose a different way.
